.Rimini, 13th November . Nicole Battefeld (29 years old, from Germany), Diego Campos (27 anni, from Colombia), Iuliia Dziadevych (aged 25, Ukraine), Cong Yuan (aged 23, China), Matija Matijako (aged 26, Croatia), Daniel Munari (aged 32, from Brazil), Sara Ricci (28 years old, from Italy), Vala Stefansdottir (30 years old, Iceland), Victoria Rovenskaya (aged 26, from Russia): these are the nine baristas, selected among over 250 of the world´s best by a jury of experts, who will take part in the new edition of Barista & Farmer, the first and only talent show dedicated to quality coffee.
The talent show, created by multi-award winning champion barista Francesco Sanapo, and organized by Italian Exhibition Group and SIGEP - International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato, Confectionery and Bakery production and the Coffee sector, with the patronage of the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA), will be held in May 2018 in Colombia. The tenth participant will be announced at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) in March 2018
The nine finalists were announced on Sunday 12th November at the Seoul Cafe Show in South Korea, during the WBC - World Barista Championship - by Sanapo and the winner of the last edition, Greek barista Nikolaos Kanakaris.
Environmental sustainability has always been an important issue for the show´s creators and has had a higher profile since the last edition. To the values of ´education´ and ´competition´, the 2018 edition is adding precisely that of ´sustainability´, thanks to the collaboration with Lavazza, one of the initiative´s main sponsors and partners, who, via its Foundation´s projects, works on improving the social and environmental conditions and the production processes of some of the communities of coffee producers. Following the 2016 edition in Brazil´s Lambarì plantation, the project will have a key role in the Colombian experience too.
Barista & Farmer 2018 promises new content and new features. The participants will be involved in a comprehensive project that starts with the coffee plantation harvests, includes all the stages of coffee production and the range of technologies used and ends with coffee tasting opportunities and a look at the various ways in which coffee is enjoyed. They will attend a special multi-discipline school, the Barista & Farmer Academy, under the direction of Alberto Polojac and with numerous teachers with considerable international experience, who will follow the SCA training modules, covering the subjects of agronomy, botany, elements of raw coffee and roasting through to extraction methods. Work and study will be combined with amusement and relaxation, with thematic games and competitions.
Videos will be shot of the finalists and the recordings broadcast on www.baristafarmer.com and the talent show´s social networks. A documentary will be made of this edition (each year, the talent show is covered with a different artistic slant and the latest production can be seen on the event´s YouTube channel). A new way of conceiving the coffee world will thus be shown, with the intent of spreading this increasingly global culture (coffee is the second most common drink after water).
Barista & Farmer, created by Francesco Sanapo, is organized by Italian Exhibition Group and SIGEP - International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato, Confectionery and Bakery production and the Coffee sector, with the patronage of the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA), in collaboration with World Coffee Events and Lavazza´s ¡Tierra! project. The event has the support of Lavazza, La Cimbali, Faema, Mumac Academy, Urnex and Genovese Coffee; its golden media partners are Barista Magazine and Bargiornale.
Colombia, country of origin of the fourth edition - Colombia is the world´s third exporter of coffee and has always played a key role on the world´s coffee production scenario, thanks to both the excellent quality of its raw material and the small communities of producers who cultivate it with great dedication and passion, often still using high-quality traditional methods. According to recent data from the Italian Coffee Committee, in the period from December 2015 to November 2016, Colombia exported 12.5 million sacks of green coffee, while Italian imports of Colombian green coffee totalled 17.5 million kg (the equivalent of 292,273 sacks) in the period from January to September 2016.
In the Colombian municipalities of Mesetas, Lejanias and San Juan de Arama, the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation carries out important sustainability projects to provide local coffee growers the means for handling the effects of climate change and reintegrate the producers´ families in areas that in recent decades have been hit by profound social crises.
