Director of Alma Mater Institute on Healthy Planet (Alma Healthy Planet) Interdepartmental Centre and Scientific/technical coordinator of the National Bioeconomy Coordination, at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers

Fabio Fava (1963) was graduated cum laude in "Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies" at the Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna (Italy) and then he earned his Ph.D. in "Applied Microbiology" from the Institute of Chemical Technology of the University of Prague (Czech Republic). He was visiting scientist at the following US institutions, namely: a) New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJ, USA), b) Hazardous Substance Management Research Center (NJ, USA), and c) Rutgers University (NJ, USA) in 1993, 1994 and 1999, respectively. He is Full Professor of Industrial & Environmental Biotechnology at the School of Engineering of the Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna (Italy) since 2005. He served the same School as Dean's Delegate for International relations from 2005 to 2012. He is currently the Deputy Rector of the University of Bologna for Industrial Research, Territorial cooperation and Innovation.

He is actively working in the fields of environmental and industrial biotechnology and of the Circular Bioeconomy in the frame of a number of national and European collaborative projects. He coordinated the European FP7 collaborative projects NAMASTE and BIOCLEAN and participated in the FP7 collaborative projects ECOBIOCAP, ROUTES, MINOTAURUS, WATER4CROPS,  ULIXES, KILL SPILL and BIORICE.

F. Fava published about 180 papers on medium/high IF peer-review international journals of industrial and environmental biotechnology. He has 7653 overall citations, a h-index of 51 and an i10 index of 137 (Google Scholar).

F. Fava served and is serving several national, European and international panels, by covering, among others, the following positions: a) Scientific Chair of the “Italian Bioeconomy strategy” and related “Implementation Action Plan” and Chair of the “National Bioeconomy Coordination Board” of the National Committee for “Biosafety, Biotechnology and Life Sciences” of the Presidency of Council of Ministers (Rome); b) scientific advisor for Circular Economy and Resource use at the European Environmental Agency (Copenaghen), c) Italian Representative in the “European Bioeconomy Policy Forum” of the European Commission, Brussels, d) Italian Representative in the Horizon2020 Programme Committee of Societal Challenge 2: European Bioeconomy Challenges: Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and inland water research" European Commission (Brussels); e) Italian Representative in the "State Representative Group" of the Public Private Partnership "Biobased Industry" (PPP BBI JU) (Brussels); f) Italian Representative in the Group of Senior Officials for the BLUEMED Initiative WG, European Commission (Brussels); g) Member of the "Working Party on Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Converging Technologies" of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, Paris); and h)Past Chair (2011-2013) and current Deputy Chair of the "Environmental Biotechnology section" of European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB)(Barcellona).

He is the Chair of the Scientific/Technical Committee of the annual international Exhibition "Ecomondo" (held in Rimini, Italy) since 2013.
